Letters to Political Prisoners

Every Letter Matters

Why This Matters

In today's Russia, hundreds of people remain imprisoned for peacefully expressing their opinions, opposing the war in Ukraine, defending human rights, practicing their religion, or exercising other fundamental freedoms. Many have been sentenced under laws that criminalize dissent, leaving families separated and voices silenced.

For those behind bars, a simple postcard can mean more than we might imagine. It reminds them that they are not forgotten, that people around the globe know their names, and that someone is standing with them. These messages provide hope, strength, and a powerful reminder that the world is watching.

What We Do

Since May 2024, Russian Seattle for Freedom has hosted monthly letter-writing events, inviting our community to write postcards and letters to political prisoners in Russia.

Together, we send an average of 20–40 postcards at each event, expanding our efforts during the holidays and nationwide solidarity campaigns. We proudly collaborate with OVD-Info's "Letters to Political Prisoners" project and participate in campaigns such as You Are Not Alone, Summer of Hope, and others.

As of August 2026, our volunteers have written and mailed over 1,000 postcards and letters - each one carrying a message of hope and solidarity.

Get Involved

Whether it's your first letter or your hundredth, everyone is welcome. We provide addresses, translations, and everything needed to participate.

We believe solidarity has the power to cross borders, languages, and prison walls. Together, we can remind people imprisoned for their beliefs that they are not alone, and that those who are free have a responsibility to stand beside them.
