Everyone Deserves to Live Authentically
Why This Matters
For LGBTQ+ people in Russia, simply being yourself has become increasingly dangerous. In recent years, the Russian government has expanded laws targeting LGBTQ+ people, including banning so-called "LGBT propaganda" and labeling the "international LGBT movement" as an extremist organization. These measures have fueled discrimination, censorship, fear, and persecution, forcing many people to hide their identities or flee their homes in search of safety.
No one should have to choose between living authentically and living safely.
What We Do
Russian Seattle for Freedom supports LGBTQ+ individuals through community, advocacy, and direct assistance.
We host Heart Circle gatherings - a welcoming space where LGBTQ+ people can share their experiences, build meaningful connections, and find support while navigating immigration, identity, and life in a new country. These events foster belonging, resilience, and healing through honest conversation and mutual care.
Heart Circle is currently paused until further notice, but we look forward to resuming these gatherings when circumstances allow.
We proudly participated in the Seattle Pride Parade in 2024, 2025, and 2026, marching not only for ourselves but also for LGBTQ+ people in Russia and other Russian-speaking communities who cannot safely celebrate Pride or openly express who they are. By taking part, we amplify the voices of those who have been silenced and remind them that they are seen, supported, and not forgotten.
We also partnered with Equal PostOst, an organization that helps LGBTQ+ people from Eastern Europe and Central Asia find safety and rebuild their lives after persecution. Together, we raised funds to support emergency relocation and humanitarian assistance.
In addition, we provide guidance and community support to LGBTQ+ asylum seekers in the United States, including assistance for individuals in immigration detention, fundraising for legal representation, and connecting people with trusted resources during one of the most difficult periods of their lives.
We believe that everyone deserves to live openly, safely, and with dignity - regardless of who they are or whom they love. By building community, raising awareness, and standing in solidarity, we help ensure that no one has to face persecution alone.
